What is ChatGPT Images 2.6?
It is the newest version of the tool that makes and edits pictures inside ChatGPT. OpenAI released it on November 4, 2026.
Here is what changed for ChatGPT users:
- Faster images. OpenAI says it makes images 50% faster than before.
- Steadier edits. Details stay put as you edit. OpenAI's example: a character keeps the same outfit when you change the background.
- 2 new features. GIF creation, and saved reference images.
A GIF is a short picture that moves and repeats on a loop. You see them all over social media.
To start, ask for an image right in a chat. Or select More, then Images.
Who can use it?
OpenAI says Images 2.6 is out around the world on all tiers. It works on desktop, mobile and the web.
Here's the thing. GIF creation is still rolling out. It may not show up on your account yet. If it does not work today, try again later.
These pages do not say if GIFs reach every plan at the same time. They do not list GIF limits.
One more option sits on paid plans. OpenAI lists "Images with thinking" on Plus, Pro and Business. It says Enterprise and Edu get it soon.
How do you make a GIF in ChatGPT?
You ask for one in plain words. Say it is a looping GIF, and say what should move.
- Open a chat in ChatGPT.
- Type what you want. OpenAI's own example is "Make a looping GIF of a paper boat bobbing on the water."
- Or upload a still image and ask ChatGPT to animate it.
- Wait for it to finish. OpenAI says images can take a few minutes. You can keep using ChatGPT while one is made.
- Want a change? Describe the edit in the same chat.
- Open the GIF to change how fast it plays, save it to your device, or share it.
You can start from a rough sketch, too. OpenAI's example: upload a sketch and ask ChatGPT to make the character wave.
One limit. ChatGPT can't edit an animated GIF you upload. To change a GIF ChatGPT made, describe the edit.
How do you save a photo to reuse later?
You save it once with a name. Then you call it up with @ in a later chat. No more hunting for the file.
- Upload a photo to a chat.
- Ask ChatGPT to save it as a reference.
- Choose a name for it and save it.
- In a later chat, type @ and the saved name in your prompt.
OpenAI's example is a dog named Pepper. You would type "Make a watercolor portrait of @Pepper."
ChatGPT may offer to save a photo on its own when you describe it. These pages do not list a limit for saved photos.
Try this: a looping GIF for your next post
Imagine if your next post moved, and you made it with one sentence. OpenAI says marketers can use GIFs to animate a brand mascot or make reactions for social media.
Copy this prompt. Change the details to fit your business.
Make a looping GIF of a coffee mug on a desk next to an open notebook. Steam rises slowly from the mug. Soft morning light. Calm and simple. No words in the image.
Then ask for one change at a time.
Make it play a little slower.
Open the GIF, save it, and add it to your post.
Try this too: save your product photo once
Do you post the same product, book cover or office again and again? Save that photo as a reference.
Save this photo as a reference called Desk.
Next week, in a new chat, type:
Put @Desk in a cozy winter scene with soft snow outside the window. Keep the desk and everything on it the same.
You skip the upload each time. Say it. It builds. You approve.
What should you watch out for?
- Rollout. GIFs are still rolling out. Your account may not have them yet.
- Uploaded GIFs. ChatGPT can't edit an animated GIF you upload.
- Other people's photos. Our advice: ask first before you upload a photo of a client or anyone else.
- Check the result. Look closely at every image before you post it. Fix anything that looks off.
- Deleting. OpenAI says your images save under Images. To delete one, delete the chat where you made it. This help page does not say how to delete a saved reference photo.
The bigger picture
Start with a clear sentence about what should move. Then check what ChatGPT makes before you post it.
The tools moved. The habits did not.
